About the Artist

David Pickel is a self-taught tattoo artist based in Madison, Indiana and the artist behind Ashlar Tattoo Company. His work is centered primarily around black and grey tattooing, with a strong focus on bold contrast, deep black anchors, illustrative detail, and designs built specifically to work with the client’s anatomy.
Ashlar was created as a private, professional studio where the focus stays on the artwork and the client experience. David’s approach continues to evolve toward dark illustrative black and grey work, with skulls, florals, masks, and other high-contrast imagery among the subjects that most naturally fit his style.
Outside the studio, David works closely with brands within the tattoo industry. He is a member of the CPTINK Pro Team and works closely with WickedFast Skincare, his primary aftercare partner. These relationships extend beyond product use into convention representation, artist networking, product education, content, and brand support within the tattoo community.
David is becoming increasingly active on the tattoo convention circuit, with regional shows and competition opportunities becoming a growing part of Ashlar Tattoo Company. The goal is to continue expanding beyond Madison through Midwest and regional conventions — tattooing, competing, connecting with other artists, and representing the brands he works with along the way.
